CrossSections aims at discussing and sharing diverse realities, conditions, and strategies in different geographies. By placing the artistic production at the center of its research and plot, it is being shaped by the cumulative interdisciplinary input and data through meetings, residencies, performative presentations, and publications in the course of two years. Its research process involves different focus groups, institutions, and educational bodies engaging with re-positioning perspectives by giving priority to the production.
In the course of three years (2017-2020), with the participation of 19 artists, some scholars and cultural workers, various meetings, workshops, exhibitions, performances, and talks will be held in three cities: Vienna, Helsinki, Tallinn, and Stockholm.
CrossSections exhibitions started with a triology in Vienna by focusing on collectivity. Therefore, the triology consisted of three group shows. The first two exhibition had a shorter duration. They were accompanied by talks, and presentations aimed to record and display the research strains, on-going processes, and artistic methodologies of the participating artists with a particular and experimental curatorial approach. CrossSections_Intervals was the last and conclusive exhibition of the trilogy which started with CrossSections_Potentials and continued with CrossSections_Intensities.
The long duration of the CrossSections_Intervals exhibition in comparison with its first two iterations also designated the layered formation of CrossSections_Intervals with more input and proceedings. In this exhibition, the cumulative interdisciplinary input and data as the result of the process of the project are being transformed and translated into different kinds of narration and documentation as a set of intervals. They serve as sources and potentials for other future implementations and articulations of the project.
CrossSections discusses how to communicate the potentials of the research along with the end product as the artwork. Therefore, from the beginning, the audience has been the most important parameter to shape the modes of presentations of the project.CrossSections is designed as an interdisciplinary platform for explorations into artistic research, dialogue, and production. The project employs an open format to reflect upon “process” with the intent to articulate critical reactions to the political, economic, and social disturbances facing us today.
CrossSections_Potentials was designed to be a 10 days exhibition, accompanied by performances, talks, and presentations regarding the on-going research and development process of the participating artists’ projects. The exhibition also gave an insight into the working methodology of the artists through different formats that were experienced and experimented with within the exhibition space.
CrossSections_Intensities is the second group exhibition of the project which also takes place at Kunsthalle Exnergasse WUK (Werkstätten und Kulturhaus) in Vienna.
CrossSections_Intensitites is the continuation of the CrossSections_potentials as another 10 days exhibiton, accompanied with talks, and presentations regarding the on-going research and development process of the participating artists’ projects. As the continuation of the CrossSections_Potentials Exhibition, CrossSections_Intensities attempts to remind the first exhibition primarily with the exhibition layout. Once again, the exhibition design follows the architectural aspects of Kunsthalle Exnergasse WUK (Werkstätten und Kulturhaus) with the same display units. By also introducing other artists and their working methadology through different formats with a repetitive approach, the exhibition demonstrates the experimentral aspects of the project.
CrossSections_Intervals is the final and final exhibition in a trilogy that started with CrossSections_Potentials and CrossSections_ Intensities was continued. These first two-day exhibitions, which were accompanied by roundtables and presentations, documented the research priorities, ongoing work processes and artistic methodologies of the participating artists as part of a specific and experimental curatorial model. The structure of the events and the spatial design of the two exhibitions responded to the architectural conditions of the Kunsthalle Exnergasse, always using the same exhibition modules. At the final exhibition, therefore, those modules as well as the place will have undergone a transformation through the accumulation of works of art that evolved over time.
