Mirror/Specchio, curated by Başak Şenova and Jonatan Habib Enqgvist in
August 2025 for Agrigento Capitale Italiana della Cultura 2025, transformed
Teatro Pirandello into an experimental venue where the operatic setting
was reimagined through contemporary artistic practices. This book, edited
by the curators, conceived as the second chapter of Mirror/Specchio, reflects
on the project through the eyes of a stray cat, Zurfarari, whose wandering
perspective offers fragmentary insights into the exhibition, the theatre, and
the city. These reflections are occasionally punctuated by brief remarks
from a gecko, a dog, and a dove. Structured in six acts, the programme
presented film-based artworks with musical, acoustic, and performative
elements in place of a traditional opera or concert. Photographic works
were installed directly on the stage, using the theatre’s mechanical systems
to create an immersive spatial experience. During intervals, audiences were
invited on stage to explore alternative modes of spectatorship. The third
and final chapter extended the project through dissemination programmes
developed in collaboration with partner institutions across Europe.
