01.12.2023, 16:00–17:00 // Book launch: ‘Oh To Believe in Another World’ by William Kentridge at Flux 2, University of Applied Arts Vienna. This book launch event, along with Kentridge’s reflective and process-oriented talk, will serve as a compelling example of the ways in which visual art and classical music can intersect within a shared temporal framework. The event centres on his 2022 film Oh To Believe in Another World, created to accompany Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10 in E Minor and conceived to be experienced alongside a live performance. Rather than illustrating the music, Kentridge approaches the symphony as a parallel system, developing a cinematic work that unfolds in dialogue with its structure. He discusses the process of balancing sound and image to explore Shostakovich’s complex relationship with the Soviet state, describing how the project evolved through sustained visual experimentation, narrative construction and material investigation, ultimately resulting in both the film and the publication.
This event was realised in the context of the PEEK project “Atlas (of Creative Mechanisms): [Curating-Conducting]” by Basak Senova, awarded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF).
